hi all! this post is for stephanie, who recently commented on my blog. she was wondering about when to introduce signing to little ones. i am sure that she'd love your feedback as well as mine, so feel free to comment.
i have used signs with my current family as well as my last. and they work wonders. wonders! with my past family, the little man never got frustrated trying to get his point across before he could speak because he could sign what he was thinking. it was so awesome to see him evolve and to learn his thought process. and now, he is an amazingly articulate little 3 year old who started talking very early and improved even faster.
with my current family, the chop is really getting into the signs now. since turning a year, they really seem to have kicked in. she is using some words now, but the signs definitely come into play on a daily basis. she is very proud of herself and loves to 'communicate'.
with both kiddos, i started signing around 6 months old. i knew that they wouldn't catch on immediately, but as we nannies know.....consistency is key. i would use signs in my speaking with both kids and make sure we had eye contact when it was being done. i would use just about every sign i could, knowing that at some point they would start to kick in.
a good place to go read about signing is here: Born2Sign. it talks about the author's experience, as well as what is being learned about signing with your little ones. it also gives you a way to search a word and see the sign for it. easy peasy!
i had the chance to meet joseph garcia, the founder of Sign2Me. he is a very sweet and intelligent man with some great signing ideas and a great signing book. you can look into his stuff as well for further information.
if you do a google search on "baby signs" you'll find a lot of great information. i personally think signing is a great thing and really helps in the development of small children.
so, good luck stephanie! thanks for stopping by and i hope to hear how it goes for you!

Thankyou so much! I'd love to hear any advice other have as well, but this gives me a place to start. I studied ASL for 3 years in college and am semi-fluent. I love the language, but was unsure about timing, and the best signs to chose. I'm excited about starting some signs with my girls.
Wow, I'm sorry that I missed this post. But I'll pitch in now.
Start early! But even if the kids are older don't let that stop you.
Start with things like more and all done. Continue with please, thank you, ball, shoe, and anything else that you would use every day. If you keep it up, you could have a 2 year old signing her alphabet and colours. Which is absolutely amazing.
Any questions, just ask! I'm tired, so this comment is much shorter than it could be. And I need to figure out why bloglines doesn't tell me you've posted anymore.
